Bright with Black and White

This quilt is extra special because it was made for my new nephew!  Usually I feel paralyzed when making a quilt for a specific person.  (let's face it, I made this quilt for his mom, not the baby!)

This time though, it came together easily.  She gave me complete freedom to make it however I felt like.  I know she likes bright rich colors, so that was a great starting point.

I actually used the numbers print with the black background as my color inspiration.  (it's called Countdown by Alexander Henry)

As I was pulling fabric I was a bit concerned that it was gonna be too crazy, but I went with my gut feeling that it would all pull together.

I used a Shannon Cuddle fabric for the back (also know as minky) that I found at a Quilt Shop in Calgary.  When I saw this piece, I knew it was just what this quilt needed!

I tied it with white yarn on each triangle point, and brought the backing around to the front for a binding.  The reason I chose to do this was largely the soft factor.  I know babies like to nuzzle the edges of their blankets, so I wanted to take advantage of this cuddly fabric.

I used the concept of this tutorial, but left my backing more like 2" bigger, just because of its bulk.  I'll admit, those corners were a bit of a job to wrangle, but the nice thing about minky fabric is that it's plush pile is so forgiving!  You can't see if the stitching isn't perfectly straight, or that I stitched over the corners twice for durability.
