Star Beginnings
Thursday, July 17, 2014
This has not been my lucky week for sewing time! This group of nine star blocks is the extent of my sewing so far. As you may have guessed, this is a tentative beginning for my son's quilt. So it's not rainbows, but it's not mostly grays either, so we're finding a happy compromise (I think!)
Big surprise, I decided to go with wonky star blocks, because star quilts always win in my opinion. I might mix in a few other blocks as well, or not. These blocks finish at 9" square, so I'm planning to make 63 of them.
These 9 blocks are a good start right? They can get a little tedious to make, but I think they're a no fail recipe!

I love the travel-themed photo shoot.
ReplyDeleteI agree - they can be soooo tedious, but they sure make cute quilts!
ReplyDeleteWonderful blocks!! I agree - I love star blocks too! They are useful for everyone and in every season :)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice time

I love your fabric combinations! The colors remind me of the graphics used in vintage 40's travel posters, which is interesting because your photos are travel themed.
ReplyDeleteNow I can't wait to see the finish! I thought of you today! I was finally getting my stash moved onto the shelves in my new sewing room... Can't think of anything more fun :) Except my quilty conscience was pricked when I realized the ratio of UFOs to Finished Quilts in my repertoire (did I actually spell that right?) I think I shall have to set some "finish" goals!!
ReplyDeleteGreat choices, I love the pattern combinations too. This is going to be a beautiful quilt.
ReplyDeleteI agree, and you are way ahead of me, no sewing yet this week.....
ReplyDeleteYour stars are beautiful! Love the colour scheme! I haven't managed to squeeze in any sewing at all this week, so here's to a better week next week :)
ReplyDeleteThey are so beautiful! If I did the math correctly you are 1/7th done. {I'm bad that way, have to figure out you far I am in fractions! But it helps keep me going!}
ReplyDeleteLove them and love your fabric choices. I have recently made some of my first wonky stars and I think they could become addictive :)
ReplyDeleteLove them!
ReplyDeletethey are fabulous! good fall back option. there's a reason you keep coming back to this block. it's amazing and works every time. good pick.
ReplyDeleteYour son is one lucky kid! His quilt is going to be sophisticated yet fun! Great job :)
ReplyDeleteReally I could use either color card--thanks for the offer!
ReplyDeleteGreat balance of fun, varied colors and fabrics for the "rainbow" request, and yet it will be a lovely quilt. Win-Win!
ReplyDeleteI love the colours, i think it makes it have an awesome retro feel! The stars look great too, this quilt will be wicked :)
ReplyDeletePerfect start! And I think it will last longer than if you went with a straight rainbow, he might grow out of that, but who could grow out of gorgeous colorful stars? :D
ReplyDeleteOoh they are lovely - I especially love the newspapery/adverty print on the bottom row middle square. I am just getting into quilting - I had no idea how fabulous it was until around 6 weeks ago!
