I stumbled upon this quiltalong, and was instantly interested. It's taking an antique quilt and remaking it, which I always love the concept of. Go here and here to read all the details.
Here's the great thing about this quilt. I had already decided to make this quilt, but hadn't read any details about it. It struck me as interesting that it was called the FootHills quilt. I live 1 1/2 hours from the Rocky Mountains in Central Alberta, and the area between our prairies and these mountains is known as the Foothills. I figured that 'foothills' is maybe a common name for this type of country. And then reading into it, I realized that this quilt actually is from Alberta! The maker and exact location is unknown, so that means it could have been sewn in any old farmhouse I see around me as I drive down the road! This is quite thrilling to me, as the quilt history in this part of the world is not very plentiful.
So it seems I for sure must make a quilt like this:) I've started in, and feel a bit stalled. Not just loving my blocks... my idea immediately is that I wanted to emphasize the geese blocks going up and down so they would be mostly dark values, and the remaining pieces would all be medium to light values. I'm hoping once I get a few more blocks made, and add the sashing, it will all come together.
I am really loving your blocks! Vintage, scrappy blocks appeal to me. I find it hard sometimes to decide which parts to put the most emphasis on and that is where I get stuck. I think your idea to focus on the flying geese will be good. Perhaps once you get more blocks up, you will get a better idea if that is how you will want to proceed. Looking forward to following your progress!
ReplyDeleteI really like your blocks. How great - the connection to Alberta. I am seeing lots of these blocks pop up on Instagram and I’m tempted!
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks, light & pretty & scrappy! There's alot of info on the QAL post, thanks for the links.
ReplyDeleteI live in the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado. We're about 40 miles NW of Ft Collins at 7500' and you can see into Rocky Mountain National Park from my back deck. :) I'm definitely going to need to put this on my to-do list.
ReplyDeleteLove your geese blocks esp the red one.
ReplyDeleteLiking where this quilt is headed.
ReplyDeleteSo funny that you're not entirely happy with your blocks. These are the first blocks that I've seen that just about tip me over the edge into trying to make the quilt! LOVE the combination of colors!
ReplyDeleteThey look great. Keep going!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are great...don't stop!
ReplyDeleteLove your blocks and rendition. I am headed to QuiltCon but my post scheduled for this Monday addresses just what your going through. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you have going here... when I look at this quilt I feel a bit distant from it but when I see what you are creating I find myself warming up to the pattern. I look forward to seeing you continue to create.
ReplyDeletewow and wow...great job
ReplyDeleteYour blocks look great so far and I too love finding and making connections. Like I didn't realize you're Canadian too! I'm in Victoria now but I lived in Banff for a year. I had no idea I would fall in love with the mountains as much as I did. I'll look forward to the rest of your quilt.
ReplyDeletekeep it up, it will be worth it. Great blocks, and great job.........
ReplyDeleteI, too, live in the foothills...of the Catskills mountains. So, you’re right! It must be a common term. It seems like the challenge with this quilt is value. There are a lot of secondary design possibilities. If anyone can tackle it, you can!
ReplyDeleteI find it funny that you are saying you are not quite loving the direction you are going with your blocks yet. I stopped my cursor and let out a soft gasp when I saw them! I especially love the 2 blocks on the left in the second photo. You have my vote to continue on with confidence!
ReplyDeleteYour fabrics/color choices are amazing, you have such a great way of pulling fabric for a quilt project. Can’t wait to see how this turns out and your sashing choice as well. Thanks for introducing us to the author/QAL...
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how this quilt turned out. I did this quilt along precisely because I saw yours on your blog. Mine turned out amazing! I used Denyse Schmidt fabrics. Are you on instagram?
